Where is your ideal place to work for the day? Are you distracted by the slightest noise and need somewhere library-esk to hunker down and get things done? Or like me do you love the hustle and bustle of open plan work spaces, with music and people milling around.
I have worked in retail and hospitality marketing my entire career. This often required site and retail visits, working out of my respective employer’s hotel or café / restaurant. And this is where I people watch, seeing those all important interactions between team members and customers, getting a better understanding of how customers navigate the store flow and merchandising or use high level messaging such as menu boards and point of sale. To me this certainly beats sitting in a corporate office with rows of desks and nothing but the sound of tapping of keyboards.
Now I’m a freelance marketer, I need to be out on the streets seeing and experiencing what the real world of retail marketing looks like and finding great new ideas and inspiration. And one of the perks of the job is that I get to choose a different office every day. Whether that’s meeting new clients or networking with fellow businesses owners to collaborate on a new project or brainstorm creative ideas.
So from London to the Home Counties here is a round of some of my favourite inspirational places and spaces.
Meeting up for brunch with my great friend, travel writer and blogger Andrew Forbes gave me the perfect excuse to re-visit the uber trendy Shoreditch and Farringdon areas – home to some of the great brand agencies I use to work with on many a branding project. The Hoxton Hotel has great working spaces, from the comfy armchairs in the foyer area to the themed meeting rooms for larger more private meetings. If you are a creative type then this is the place for you.
Inspiration: How can you not get the creative juices flowing in such a trendy part of London
Work Productivity: You are in good company. The place is full of busy bees tapping away on their laptops
Throughout my career I have worked with and for some amazing and talented people and its great to keep in touch and meet up. One such occasion was meeting with an old boss who introduced me to this roof top bar one summer evening. Lets just say a fair few Aperol Spritz were consumed – there was a lot to catch up on after all!
After Work Vibe: Perfect place for catching those last rays after a full on week in the office
Noise Levels: Pardon! Not for those who want to have a deep and meaningful
I love this place – Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dinner I could bed down for the day and not move. Charlottes Place W5 know how to do social gatherings. They also do great coffee (or in my case pots of tea) and slices of yummy cake. I met up with some networking colleagues and this is a great way to break the ice and make new connections over sharing platters and tapas style small dishes.
Social: We all know food breaks down barriers
Work Productivity: With all day eating choices you’ll have the fuel needed to get things done
Where do you meet an old school friend you haven’t seen in 30 years? For such a special occasion it has to be the ham Yard Hotel. With so much catching up then buckets of rose and champagne on ice are the order of the day. But it doesn’t just stop there – this hotel has the funkiest spaces for team social events such as basement bowling alley and theatre all beautifully designed by the amazing Kit Kemp
Post & Boast Rating: This place is off the scale
Team Events: You’d be hard pushed to find a venue more awesome
So a friend from work has thrown in the corporate towel and is setting up their own business. Sounds familiar! You want somewhere to give them the lowdown of your own experiences good and bad without the formality of going for lunch. And both being dog owners this is ideal – talk and walk with the promise of a chai latte at the end – Perfect!
Multi Tasking: Talking and Walking
Stimulation: One of best Chai Lattes around
And last but by no means least is this wonderful little café in a cute courtyard setting for some me-time, breakfast and ability to watch the world go by in all its glory. There is tea and toast and there is Satollo tea and toast.
People Watching: There will always be someone walking by you know
Breakfast: Marmalades and Preserves are out of this world
So that’s my list for now. Let me know your favourite place to work.
